Both the name and the interior design of this modern expedition ship are inspired by the spectacular Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
The art, décor and colours employed aboard this ship are all inspired by the northern lights. The delicate aesthetic creates a distinct and unique on-board ambience. Passengers are invited to relax after a long day experiencing Hurtigruten´s various excursions and activities in comfy reclining chairs in the one of the ship’s lounges.
Refurbishment in 2019
In May 2019 MS Nordlys was refurbished. All cabins got a makeover, while new cabin grades were added. The upgrade saw a number of new features being added to the ship:
All staterooms and suites are fully upgraded to match Hurtigruten’s new standards. On deck 6, a number of cabins were merged into larger suites, some with large bay windows and spectacular views.
In addition to a full makeover, the aft-facing Torget main restaurant has large deck-to-ceiling windows.
The brand-new Activity Center will act as the on-board headquarter for Hurtigruten’s Expedition Team.
Kysten Fine Dining – serving innovative dishes based on high quality, local produce such as ultra-fresh seafood – is slightly different from other Hurtigruten ships, and also be open for a la carte lunch.
The gym on deck 7 is bigger, the sauna upgraded and two aft-facing outdoor hot tubs are added.
Two new lecture halls have been added on deck 4, together with the open Kompass information and shopping area, where guests can enjoy exclusive offers on outdoor clothing and other items.
On deck 7, the informal and hugely popular Hurtigruten venue Multe Bakery is now open- serving freshly baked cakes and pastries, smørbrød (open sandwiches with generous amounts of topping), smoothies, a large assortment of local ice cream with homemade toppings, premium coffee, organic herbal tea, and premium juice.
The forward-facing Explorer Lounge and Panorama Bar offers a unique atmosphere and the best views on the ship – with front-row seats for enjoying the Northern Lights, Midnight Sun, wildlife and nature as it passes by.
Expedition team on board
MS Nordlys has her own on-board Expedition Team that serves as a university at sea. Interesting lectures, presentations and activities inside as well as out on the sun deck of the ship make this an exciting and educational journey. Topics depend on the season and the waters we sail in. The Expedition Team will host a lecture and presentation programme and evening gatherings daily. Out on deck you may participate in live points of interest to learn more about the nature, culture and other phenomena we encounter along the coast. In addition, the Expedition Team will introduce you to the uniquely Norwegian notion of `friluftsliv´, and encourage you take part in `friluftsliv´ hikes and activities during the journey.

The city offers the ideal combination of nature, culture, history and exhilarating city life. What has made Bergen famous is its unique charm, which is something you have to experience for yourself. Enjoy strolling around the old streets and alleyways where people have lived for centuries. Walking through UNESCO-listed Bryggens narrow alleyways, made even darker and more mysterious by overhanging balconies, feels like stepping back in time. Bryggen is not a museum but part of the cultural heritage that is still in use - a living historical area of the city. The Flibanen Funicular is a very popular attraction, running from the city centre to the top of Mount Flyen in about 7 minutes. From the viewing platform you can admire spectacular views of the city, mountains and fjords. In addition to the wide range of hikes, youll find a restaurant, caf, souvenir shop and playground.

lesund is mostly known for its unique Art Nouveau architecture, which was in fact the result of a disaster. In 1904, the larger part of lesund was destroyed in a devastating fire. In an act of excellent foresight, it was decided to rebuild the town entirely in Art Nouveau, the fashionable style of the time. Most of this beauty has been preserved. If you look up as you explore the town, you will be enchanted by the rounded towers, sinuous lines and foliate forms typical of Art Nouveau.

Kristiansand is a city in southern Norway. Its old town, Posebyen, features traditional wooden houses. In the center, neo-Gothic Kristiansand Cathedral is near the Srlandets Museum, which displays Norwegian art from 1800 to today. The southeastern shoreline includes the Bystranda city beach, the 17th-century Christiansholm Fortress rotunda and Fiskebrygga quay, lined with fishmongers selling their catch.

Brnnysund is situated on a narrow peninsula on the mainland, surrounded by islands and water. Here, youre actually half way on the long northbound stretch of land that is Norway. The small coastal town of 5,000 inhabitants is centred on the narrow, but strategically situated harbour, which caters for all trade and fishing. It is a vibrant and pretty little town with an attractive visitors marina. Use some time to stroll around the streets perhaps a walk along Havnegata, where you can enjoy looking at the small boats and bustling life of the archipelago. Sample the street life and go into one of the pubs, or treat yourself to a delicious meal at one of the restaurants.

Nesna is a municipality in Nordland county and part of the Helgeland region. The scenic surroundings comprise the islands of Hugla, Handnesya and Tomma. Our ships arrive twice a day, but unfortunately, we do not stop long enough here for you to take a walk. Still, from deck you can see locals embark and disembark, and mail and cargo getting loaded on and off the ship a part of everyday life along the coast.

Surrounded by sea and fjord, the light in Bod constantly shifts with the wind and weather. And then theres the exotic fact that both the midnight sun and northern lights can be seen from here. Bod is the capital of Nordland county and lies just north of the Arctic Circle where the midnight sun is visible from 2 June to 10 July. Due to atmospheric refraction, there is no true polar night in Bod, but because of the mountains south of Bod, the sun is not visible from the city from early December to early January. Monthly average number of sun hours in Bod peaks in June with 221 hours.

This charming fishing village is located on the south side of the island of Vestvgy in the Lofoten archipelago, along the Vestfjord. With a population of 1,000, Stamsund is an important fishing port and the largest base for Lofoten trawl fishing. Gradually, more and more tourists discover Lofoten, with its marvelous scenery, enhanced by the midnight sun in the summer and the northern lights in the winter. Lofotens legendary seasonal fishery takes place from January to April, with bustling activity on land and sea. The waters off Stamsund offer excellent opportunities for fishing, especially in March. The surrounding mountains offer ample opportunities for hiking.

Stokmarknes is the settlement and administration centre in Hadsel Municipality on the north side of the Hadselya. Among the population of only 3,200, you will find people from 25 nations, many of them attracted by job opportunities in the fishing industry. In Stokmarknes you find the museum of Hurtigruten, offering a journey through time along the coast. See the changes that have been made on board the ships over the last 120 years, and hear darker tales of shipwrecks and loss of life, also part of Hurtigrutens history. Next to the museum youll find the old ship MS Finnmarken as an impressive landmark.
